Frustration is boiling over in Malumfashi, Katsina State, where residents say they’ve had enough of the ongoing blackout that’s lasted for more than two weeks. Economic activity has slowed to a crawl, businesses are suffering, and basic services like healthcare are taking a hit.
In a strongly worded letter dated June 13, 2025, the Malumfashi Foundation called out the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for what it described as an unacceptable delay in fixing the issue. The letter, sent to the regional manager, blamed the outage on fallen electric poles along the Funtua–Malumfashi line.
The group’s chairman, Yakubu Jibrin, who signed the letter, said people are tired of the silence from KEDCO. “We’ve been in the dark for 14 days. Businesses can’t run, hospitals are struggling, and daily life has been turned upside down,” the letter said.
The group is now demanding immediate action. They’ve given KEDCO a three-day deadline to fully restore power. They also want a formal apology, and they’re asking that affected residents not be billed for the blackout period.
The letter, which was also sent to local authorities including the chairman of Malumfashi Local Government and the Divisional Police Officer, laid out a few more demands. These include deploying security to protect transformers during repairs, taking full financial responsibility for all fixes, and keeping a previous promise to install prepaid meters for residents.
At the time this report was filed, efforts to reach KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, had not been successful. Phone calls went unanswered, and a text message was ignored.
Residents say it’s no longer just about the power outage, but about accountability and communication. They’re watching closely to see if KEDCO will respond or stay silent.
