Oyo Driver Remanded for Assaulting Traffic Officers

Alleged to have attacked two Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) officers, Oke Ademola, a driver, has been directed to remain in custody at Agodi Prison.

Ademola allegedly attacked officials Kareem Yakubu and Ogunjemi Ayotunde at Agodi Gate Bus Stop while operating an unlicensed Toyota Camry. Authorities accused him of several offences, including operating an unregistered car, driving without a licence, neglecting traffic signals, refusing to use assigned parking spaces and resisting arrest.

He said in court that he had attacked the police. Under Magistrate F.R. Olaniyan, the case has been adjourned until February 26, 2025. Ademola is still in custody until a decision is finally made.

Major Adekoya Adesagba, OYRTMA Chairman, disclosed how worried he is over the growing tendency of drivers breaking traffic laws and abusing law enforcement officials following the event. He said that this kind of behaviour disturbs road safety and it makes traffic control difficulty.

He also noted the growing frequency of violent confrontations between OYRTMA personnel and drivers, including events resulting in fatalities. Notwithstanding these difficulties, he informed the people that the agency is still dedicated to enforcing traffic rules and guaranteeing the officer safety.

Authorities have cautioned that this case should be a clear illustration of the legal repercussions anyone who breaks traffic rules or attacks those in charge of keeping the roadways under order faces.
