Notwithstanding resistance from Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Nigeria Police Force, both of whom had advised the state government to postpone the event, local government elections in Osun State have proceeded as planned.
Early as 8 a.m., voting started in some local governments, including Ede North, where Governor Ademola Adeleke cast his ballot. The governor urged everyone to take part without hesitation and said the procedure is peaceful.
Polling unit reports revealed a seamless voting system whereby people actively cast their ballots. The demand for suspension resulted from a divisive Court of Appeal decision on February 10, 2025, therefore negating a Federal High Court rule from 2022.
The decision reportedly restored previously ousted local government chairmen and councillors, therefore creating legal question over the validity of the elections. The AGF claims that this action essentially restored the local council leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) eliminated by the previous court order.
Concerns about possible violence were also expressed by the Nigeria Police, which drew on intelligence data indicating different groups, including political players were gathering to disturb public peace.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi cautioned in a statement of major security concerns should the poll go on. Arguing that it was following a court order guiding the polls to take place, the Osun State government continued on proceeding with the elections despite these warnings.
