Oshiomhole Alleges Retired Generals Collude with Foreigners to Steal Nigeria’s Minerals

Assertion that a few former military generals are collaborating with foreign parties to steal Nigeria's solid resources has been reaffirmed by Adams Oshiomhole, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior.

He initially made the accusation during an interview that was broadcast on television on February 4, 2025. He has since emphasised that his remarks were not intended to be directed at all retired generals but rather a particular subset of retired generals.

In his explanation, Oshiomhole stated that the source of his concern is a report that was submitted by a retired general. According to one former officer, he asserted that he had witnessed foreigners engaging in illegal mining activities in conjunction with several retired military personnel.

Within a span of no more than two to three pages, Oshiomhole demanded that the retired general compose a concise report that would provide a detailed account of the occurrence. Next, he handed this report over to Muhammadu Buhari, who had previously served as President.

He voiced his surprise at the circumstance, highlighting the fact that his lack of military training did not prevent him from comprehending the seriousness of the matter. The fact that Nigeria devotes a large amount of money to safeguarding its oil reserves in the Niger Delta was brought to Oshiomhole's attention.

However, the country does not provide the same level of protection for its solid minerals. He emphasised that it is absurd to think that foreigners, who are not experts in geology, would be able to discover and extract valuable minerals without aid or support from a geologist.

The alleged collaboration, as stated by Oshiomhole, poses a threat to the safety of Nigeria's natural resources. The senator's comments come at a time when there is a growing concern regarding the exploitation of resources in Nigeria. The purpose of his clarification is to emphasise the importance of addressing any potential breaches in the safeguarding of the nation's wealth.
