Honor MKO Abiola as a Former President – Orji Kalu Tells Tinubu

During a Senate news briefing Senator Orji Uzor Kalu requested that President Bola Tinubu formally declare MKO Abiola as one of the late presidents of Nigeria. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu stated that Abiola should have his portrait displayed next to past presidents at the Presidential Villa because he won the June 12 1993 electoral victory.

During his February 25 press briefing Kalu pointed out that former military President Ibrahim Babangida recently released his memoirs identifying Abiola as the election winner. President Tinubu should take one more step according to Kalu by delivering a presidential decree that declares a posthumous presidential office to Abiola.

The senator commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for his honor recognition of Abiola yet insisted that more recognition was required. The historical recognition of Moshood Abiola as a former president would bring peace to his family and strengthen his position in Nigerian history according to Kalu's assessment.

Kalu declared real problems exist in Babangida's memoir and he demanded the release of an updated edition which openly investigates the annulment of the June 12 election. He demanded that Babangida disclose the ones who stopped Abiola from becoming the officially declared election victor.

According to Kalu the coup of 1966 was a military operation with Nigerian participants from all ethnic backgrounds rather than a conspiracy led by Igbo people.
