Femi Falana Sues Meta for $5M Over Privacy Invasion and False Health Claims

There is a famous human rights lawyer in Nigeria named Femi Falana who has sued Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, for $5 million. He says that Facebook invaded his privacy and spread fake information about his health.

The case in Lagos High Court is about a video posted on the "AfriCare Health Centre" Facebook page that said Falana had been suffering from prostatitis for over 16 years.

Falana, who was accompanied by lawyer Olumide Babalola, said that Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Nigeria's Data Protection Act of 2023 had been broken.

He said that the claims in the video are all made up, including using his name and picture to make false claims about his health problems. Falana denied these claims, saying, "I have never had prostatitis or any condition related to it."

The human rights lawyer said Meta was careless because they didn't check the page or content's reliability before posting it. He said that the video had hurt his feelings, made him laughable to the public, and unfairly hurt his image, with millions of views around the world making the damage worse.

Falana wants Meta to pay him $5 million in damages and delete the video so that the false claims don't get spread any further. He made it clear that the lawsuit was required to protect his privacy and reputation.
