Pope Francis Hospitalized in Rome for Bronchitis Treatment

The Vatican announced Pope Francis's admittance to the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome for additional bronchitis testing and treatment.

After his morning audiences, the 88-year-old pontiff, who has lately struggled with respiratory problems, was admitted. Francis has been having dyspnoea since his bronchitis diagnosis last Thursday, according a Vatican statement, which is why he assigned officials to read his remarks.

His most recent hospital stay seeks to guarantee a complete assessment of his illness and offer a regulated setting for healing. The Pope has a history of respiratory difficulties; he lost half of one lung while young.

He has also had persistent medical issues, including winter bronchitis episodes. He told pilgrims at a weekly gathering earlier this month that he had a "strong cold," which the Vatican subsequently explained as bronchitis.

The pontiff made recent appearances with obvious oedema, most likely a side effect of his medicine. Francis has been busy despite his health difficulties; last September he completed a tough four-nation trip. Still, he admitted in January the challenges of ageing and said, "The Church is governed using the head and the heart, not the legs."

This hospital stay coincides with a run of medical mishaps in recent years. In 2021 Francis had diverticulitis surgery; in 2023 he had hernia repairs. Though no fractures were recorded, he also hurt his right arm in a tumble at his Vatican flat last month.

Vatican officials reassure him that the Pope is in stable state while he is under treatment. His medical staff is closely observing his rehabilitation; no clear indicator of his hospital stay length exists right now.
